Arriving by Train

Intercity 125 trains have spaces available for
wheelchairs in two carriages. Each train has an
accessible toilet which is easy to enter and
spacious. A portable ramp is needed to mount the
train and will be provided by an appointed
porter. This should be prearranged.
York Railway Station
Disabled persons toilets – Platforms 2, 8 and
9
There is an underpass tunnel for disabled
people unable to use the footbridge. Access to
the tunnel is via lifts on platforms 1, 5 and
10. Shops, bar and restaurant are all wheelchair
accessible.
Arriving by train:
Exit York Railway Station – turn left up Queen Street (the City
Walls will be on your right). Turn right and go
over the road at the first set of traffic lights
and carry on right along the wall.
When you come to the arched opening
proceed through and continue down the road until
you arrive at the corner of the Norwich Union
building and turn right down Rougier Street to
the end. Turn left and proceed over the bridge
over the river Ouse and go forward to the end of
the road and turn right. Proceed as far as the fire station and go onto the
other side of the road and turn left down Tower
Street and the museum is the second building on
the left.

Leaflets on bus services are available from
National Express (Tel. 0990 808080). National
Express has ‘disabled friendly’ coaches.
Whilst they are not fully accessible for
wheelchair users, they may be useful for someone
with limited mobility. The buses have
‘kneeling’ suspension rails and the toilet
facility is all on one level. Please check
before booking that the service is operating at
the time you require. National buses drop off
passengers in Rougier Street (off Micklegate).
Arriving by bus.
Head in the opposite direction from the City Wall and turn left with
Micklegate at your back and proceed over the
bridge over the River Ouse and go forward to the
end of the road and turn right.

Approach York from either direction and follow directions to the
Askham Bar Park and Ride (see below). However,
at Tesco supermarket roundabout continue
straight along Tadcaster Road into York. Pass
York Racecourse/Knavesmire (large open grass
area) on your right. Continue straight through
several sets of traffic lights. Pass Odeon
Cinema on the left. Take the right hand lane at
the next set of traffic lights facing Micklegate
Bar (the gate through the City Walls) and
proceed as far as you can go on the cobbled
street. proceed over the bridge over the River
Ouse and go forward to the end of the road and
turn right.
Proceed as far as the fire station and
turn left into Tower Street Disabled persons
parking bays and disabled people’s toilets are
located in the car park.

Park & Ride
Five Park & Ride sites currently operate in York.
They allow you to travel to York by car, park
for free in secure car parks and complete your
journey into the city centre by bus.
Buses are modern, frequent and fares are low with up to
two accompanied children under 16 travelling
free. There are discounts available for regular
users.
